After playing their first show of the year in Las Vegas on Friday, Dave Matthews Band helped close out the baseball-themed Extra Innings Festival in Tempe, AZ on Saturday with assistance from Trey Anastasio Band trumpeter and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick.
The surprise sit-in came late in DMB’s headlining set following a string of fan favorites including “#41”, David Bowie‘s “Let’s Dance”, “Crash Into Me”, and “Satellite”. Hartswick joined the band on the Home Plate Stage, horn in hand, for “Jimi Thing”, marking her first-ever collaboration with the ensemble. She threw down a funky solo before passing the baton off to DMB trumpeter Rashawn Ross, who turned it over saxophonist Jeff Coffin before the three soloists finished the jam with a melee of overlapping leads.
The band seamlessly transitioned to a cover of ZZ Top‘s “Cheap Sun Glasses”, and after continuing on to a fluttery “You & Me”, Matthews stopped to bashfully acknowledge Hartswick and thank her for sitting in with the band.
“Halfway through that little song right there I was like, ‘Oh no! She kicked my ass and I forgot to say thank you,’” he told the crowd. He went on to acknowledge the tragic October 7th attack at a music festival in Israel and call for peace in Gaza.
