Disney+ has given audiences a first look at the new The Beach Boys documentary premiering on May 24th. Simply titled The Beach Boys, the film features new interviews with surviving Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, and former guitarist Blondie Chaplin.
Using archival footage, the trailer provides a crash course in the six-decade history of America’s band. From the sun-kissed pop of their early surf records to the rivalry with The Beatles that resulted in the technical mastery of Pet Sounds, betrayal by their father/manager Murry Wilson, familial tragedy, and more, the rise, fall, and redemption story of The Beach Boys is told through their music. Notably absent from the trailer is Brian Wilson, whose family recently filed to place him under a new conservatorship following a diagnosis of dementia and the death of his wife and longtime conservator, Melinda Wilson.
In addition to the bandmates, The Beach Boys documentary includes new interviews with noted fans Lindsey Buckingham, Don Was, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and more. The film will also utilize archival footage of Carl and Dennis Wilson, who passed away in 1998 and 1983 respectively. Along with the documentary, The Beach Boys will release the accompanying soundtrack on May 24th. The rush of “new” Beach Boys content also includes their first official book, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys, featuring the band in their own words due on April 2nd via Genesis Publication.

This flood of content comes three years after the surviving members of the band and Carl’s sons sold The Beach Boys’ catalog, likenesses, and intellectual property to Irving Azoff‘s Iconic Artists Group. The group decision followed years of courtroom drama resulting in Mike Love winning the legal rights to the name The Beach Boys. Since then, he has toured under the official banner with Johnston while Brian—who wrote most of the band’s biggest hits—toured under his own name with Al Jardine. The two camps did unite in 2012 for a Beach Boys 50th-anniversary tour, but the good vibrations didn’t last long as Brian, Al, and Marks were abruptly jettisoned from the tour while Mike pressed on as The Beach Boys. In the decade-plus since the most significant “reunion” was when the band all sat together at the 2023 Grammys salute to The Beach Boys. Even then, Brian and Mike kept their distance.
