Goose put the indie in indie-groove last night with a surprise sit-in by Vampire Weekend during the band’s fourth and final night at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

After opening the show with a stellar first set that featured the Goose debut of “How It Ends”—a tune by Goose precursor Vasudo—Goose returned to the stage for set two and immediately brought out Vampire Weekend’s core trio of Ezra Koenig (guitar and vocals), Chris Tomson (drums), and Chris Baio (bass). Together, they played “Gen X Cops”, from Vampire Weekend’s new album, Only God Was Above Us, and the band’s 2008 hit “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”. The latter tune stretched past the 30-minute mark, with Koenig, Tomson, and Baio flexing their newfound improvisational chops.

Vampire Weekend’s new album marks a stylistic shift for the band toward a more spontaneous, jam-friendly format. The group recently gave a nod to jam band progenitors the Grateful Dead with a cover of “Peggy-O” on SiriusXMU and has upcoming tour dates with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, not to mention Koenig’s recent collaboration with onetime Grateful Dead touring keyboardist Bruce Hornsby.

Vampire Weekend’s connection to Goose goes back to 2021, when they tapped the indie-groove quintet to cover the song “2021” for the 40:42 EP. The song has appeared in Goose setlists along with another Vampire Weekend tune, “Big Blue”, over the past few years.

Goose returns to the stage next month for Solshine: A Music & Arts Reverie and will hit the road in June for the band’s summer tour. The group also just announced new shows in September. For a full list of upcoming tour dates and ticketing details, visit the band’s website.
