Maggie Rose has released her ambitious new album, No One Gets Out Alive, via Big Loud Records.
Rose’s gripping, soulful voice takes center stage on the 12-song set, which harkens back to the thoughtful songwriting of early-’70s Laurel Canyon with help from an all-star studio band and an array of enveloping string accompaniments. The music deals in themes both dark and uplifting, from disillusionment in relationships to ageism to female empowerment, as Rose takes listeners into the vulnerable corners of her mind.
The album’s title track, “No One Gets Out Alive”, is a powerful mission statement in the record’s opening slot. An introspective look at life’s fleeting nature (“Buy the house, visit Rome / Wear the dress that stops the show / Don’t you know, no one gets out alive”), it works beautifully as a piano-and-vocal ballad—but it quickly blooms from there into a soaring, cinematic celebration with a hair-raising conclusion marked by “Live and Let Die”-style orchestral grandiosity.
As the album moves through sounds and styles, the songs remain consistently powerful and resonant. Whether she’s baring bearing her soul or raising your spirits, Maggie Rose’s resolve to be bold and make impactful art—genre classifications be damned—is the glowing core of No One Gets Out Alive.
Rose assembled a dream team to record the album including Grammy-winning producer Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes), GRAMMY-nominated audio engineer Bobby Holland, and conductor Don Hart (Phish, Lyle Lovett) who oversaw the lush string arrangements that add emotional weight to several of the album’s tracks. Players include guitarist Sadler Vaden and drummer Chad Gamble from Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit, keyboardist Peter Levin (Amanda Shires, Gregg Allman, Trouble No More), bassist Zac Cockrell (Alabama Shakes) and keyboardist Kaitlyn Connor and guitarist Kyle Lewis from Rose’s own touring band.
Working with a tight-knit circle of writers, Rose brought her vulnerable song concepts to an ultra-talented group of collaborators who helped bring them to life. Songwriters featured on the album include the heavyweight duo of Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony (Miley Cyrus, Rihanna), Natalie Hemby (The Highwomen), Chris Gelbuda (Meghan Trainor, David Shaw), Pat McLaughlin (John Prine), Cliff Audretch (Hootie & The Blowfish), Henry Brill (Joy Oladokun), Charlotte Sands (JORDY), Jon Santana (Sid Tipton), Sunny Sweeney, Kaitlyn Connor, and Kyle Lewis.
To celebrate the arrival of the new project, Rose filmed a series of live performance videos at Pelham, TN’s famed The Caverns, the beloved underground venue in Pelham, TN. Two of the clips, including live renditions of album singles “Fake Flowers” and “No One Gets Out Alive” are out today.
