The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed its class of 2024 inductees will include Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band, Cher, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Kool & The Gang, all of whom will perform at the induction ceremony in Cleveland on October 19th.
Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield will also be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Excellence category, while Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton will be all honored with the Musical Influence Award. Entertainment producer Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
Ozzy was previously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006. His wife and manager, Sharon Osbourne, criticized the Hall of Fame for failing to induct Ozzy as a solo artist, saying, “I will never beg. And I will never ask for favors I’ve never asked anyone for a favor. So, my thing is fuck you if you don’t realize that somebody really deserves to be here. And you don’t recognize that? Then, see ya!”
Cher expressed similar sentiments last year, saying she had no desire to be inducted and that the Hall of Fame “can just go you-know-what themselves.” Peter Frampton, on the other hand, told fans at his recent concerts to vote for him on the spot, going so far as to project a QR code for the ballot onto a giant screen onstage, with his band playing the Jeopardy! theme while attendees cast their votes.
Among the nominees who did not make the cut this year were Oasis, Mariah Carey, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Jane’s Addiction, Eric B. & Rakim, and Lenny Kravitz. They will get another chance next year. Inductees are chosen by an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. Only artists whose first recording was released at least 25 years ago are eligible.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 induction ceremony will take place at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, OH on Saturday, October 19th, and will be available to stream live on Disney+.
