Vulfpeck Is Making A Record Live At Newly Announced California Shows

Vulfpeck will record a new album live during its upcoming shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the band announced on Monday. The new record would mark the first new batch of material for the Jack Stratton-led group since 2022’s Schvitz.

In characteristic Vulfpeck fashion, the minimalist funk ensemble provided few details about its plans to record an album in front of live audiences. Aside from a brief note on the band’s website (“vulfpeck is making a record”) and an addendum in an Instagram post (“*in front of an audience … *in September in California”) the only other information on the recording project came via guitarist Cory Wong, who noted in a social media post, “*this is not an april fools joke.”

While Vulfpeck has never made an album in front of a live audience before, fans can look to Vulf offshoot The Fearless Flyers for clues on how the process might take shape: The group’s latest EP, The Fearless Flyers IV, was recorded live on the Blue Note New York stage during an eight-show residency late last year.

As Stratton clarified when he took the stage, camera in hand, midway through one of those Flyers sets, “They’ve done one, two, three EPs, tonight we’re gonna attempt the fourth studio album! We are gonna attempt the fourth studio album live, in the studio of Blue Note. It’s a nice, dead room, we got great D.I.s coming off them, good drum mics… it sounds good. Tickets for the Vulfpeck album recording shows in Berkeley (9/18 early and late, 9/19 early and late, 9/20 early and late) and Los Angeles (9/23, 9/24) go on sale to the general public this Friday, April 5th at 10:00 a.m. PT / 1:00 p.m. ET. For complete ticketing details, head here.

The newly added shows join a relatively busy upcoming tour schedule for Vulfpeck including shows at Austin, TX’s Stubb’s (4/4, 4/5) and Burnet, TX’s Texas Eclipse Festival (4/7), an appearance at Chicago’s Rose on the River (7/7), a five-show European run in July, and a headlining set at Whale Rock Music Festival in Templeton, CA on September 15th.
