Kitchen Dwellers recently welcomed Kellen Asebroek of Fruition to join them in New York for a tender cover of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” by Elton John. The show also featured an opening set by YAM YAM.
With its references to NYC and Spanish Harlem (“And now I know / Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say / I thought I knew / But now I know that rose trees never grow / In New York City”), the 1972 track was an appropriate choice for the venue, but it was also the perfect song to showcase the augmented quintet’s full power.
Asebroek started the tune on piano and lead vocals, sounding relatively close to the original, at least as far as instrumentation, but the collaboration quickly took on a country twang as the galaxy grass quartet started picking along and banjo player Torrin Daniels took up the vocals.

Fresh off the release of their new album, Seven Devils, Kitchen Dwellers are gearing up for Widespread Panic‘s Panic En La Playa as well as a handful of dates with Leftover Salmon and The Infamous Stringdusters. The band will then head to New Orleans for A Bluegrass Tribute to Dr. John as part of Live For Live Music‘s Fest by Nite series during Jazz Fest followed by three-night runs at Colorado’s Mishawaka Amphitheater and Pine Creek Lodge in Livingston, MT.
They will wrap up its summer tour with a couple July dates in Alaska, including a stop in Juneau, hometown of bassist Joe Funk, before returning to the lower 48 for festival appearances at Hoxeyville Music Festival, JamPacked Craft Beer & Music Festival, Bender Jamboree, Strings & Sol, and Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival.
