No vacation can ever compare to Widespread Panic’s Panic en la Playa getaway. Unlimited food and drinks, in an all-inclusive hotel on the beaches of Mexico, with friends and strangers alike, a cocktail in hand and mischief afoot. Anything a music lover can dream of can be found in the spacious Hard Rock Riviera Maya resort.

White sand stompin’ and sunshine drippin’, a daytime Kitchen Dwellers bluegrass lagoon set got the chosen few Good People back in the game early. A second headlining WSP set and an after-party hosted by Trouble No More kept the party going long after the sunset. The theme of the night was “Almost Famous”.

Without warning, Widespread worked into “Holden Oversoul” to start the show, breathing heat until Duane Trucks and Dave Schools tumbled into the swift current of “All Time Low”. Bloodkin’s “Can’t Get High” set up a nine-minute instrumental performance of “Happy” like a masterful Scottie Scheffler up-and-down.

Schools lowered his shoulder and dropped into another lengthy rendition, this time the bass-heavy barrage of “Second Skin”. Suddenly, with the explosive force of a wheelbarrow full of dynamite, WSP descended into a bawdy “Junior” and hell followed with it.

After a moment to give the audience time to collect themselves, Panic freed Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock” from the chain gang for the fifth time in as many years. Shoveling coal into the furnace, John Bell added a Johnny Cash-inspired “Folsom Prison Blues” rap into the middle of the bustout. WSP then dialed into “Radio Child” to end the first set with a high-voltage finale.

Shattering the silence of the set break’s cocoon, an evolutionary “Conrad” coerced hundreds of legs in the courtyard to wiggle and squirm. A subsequent ride-along through the nostalgic back alleys of “Old Neighborhood” led back to the house of an expanded cut of “Impossible”.

WSP finished a massive, engulfing jam and parked into a cover of Bloodkin’s “Trashy”, which has been conspicuously absent from the last handful of shows. Working into its new material, Panic picked up speed “Little by Little” and settled into an uncharacteristic Monday cover of James Taylor’s “Knockin’ Round the Zoo”.

The second night’s meat and potatoes were simmered long and slow with “Papa’s Home” encapsulating Traffic‘s “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys”. Steve Winwood stayed in rotation as a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” closed out the second set after a half hour of interwoven jams. Back onstage one final time, Widespread Panic paired The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature” to end the second night at PELP Doce.

Far from over, Trouble No More took the stage for an Allman Brothers Band-themed afterparty. There’s one way out, forward! Carry on, brothers and sisters! Halfway finished and still much more music and debauchery ahead.
