Pearl Jam welcomed award-winning actor/filmmaker Bradley Cooper to the stage at Napa, CA’s BottleRock festival on Saturday night for both a duet with Eddie Vedder on “Maybe It’s Time”, the Jason Isbell-penned song featured in Cooper’s 2018 remake of A Star is Born, and a show-closing cover of Neil Young‘s “Rockin’ in the Free World”.

After opening the show’s encore with the Pearl Jam tour debut of Wayne Cochran‘s “Last Kiss”, Vedder asked the crowd to join him in welcoming his “great, great pal” for a surprise appearance. Cooper proceeded to walk out, planted a smooch on Eddie’s cheek, and sit down next to him to sing the song from the fictional repertoire of his A Star is Born character—a character largely inspired by Vedder.

As Bradley Cooper explained in the leadup to the release of A Star Is Born in 2018, Eddie Vedder played an integral role in shaping the details of Cooper’s character in the film, aging rocker Jackson Maine. In a video interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Cooper noted, “I went up to Seattle and spent four or five days with him and I asked him 9,000 questions. And he gave me minor, little things that only musicians know about what to do, just aesthetically and the inner workings. … He was wonderful.” Cooper also joked that Vedder initially warned against him making another A Star Is Born remake. “He thought it was crazy I was going to do this movie,” Cooper laughed. “He was like, ‘What? Bro, don’t do that.’” Bradley persisted, and it paid off: He went on to earn a Best Actor nomination at the 91st Academy Awards for his efforts.

While “Maybe It’s Time” just entered the Pearl Jam live repertoire earlier this month in Las Vegas, Vedder has previously performed “Maybe It’s Time” during his solo shows. When Eddie first performed the song live back in 2019, Isbell wrote on Twitter, “Holy shit Eddie Vedder sang my Bradley Cooper song in his set tonight. That is by far the strangest sentence I’ve ever composed but it’s certainly a huge honor. I was 12 when ‘Ten’ came out and by god I learned how to play every song on it.” In a reply to that post, he joked, “I like to tell folks I don’t have any hit songs but I have a song that played a hit in a movie.”

After joining in with Vedder for “Maybe It’s Time” at BottleRock 2024, Cooper returned to help round out the night vocals and tambourine for “Rockin’ in the Free World”.
