Childish Gambino, the long-dormant music alter-ego of entertainment multi-hyphenate Donald Glover, awakened (my love) on Monday by releasing a “new” album, Atavista, sharing a new music video directed by Hiro Murai, confirming a new new album due out this summer, and revealing a new batch of arena dates around the world appropriately dubbed The New World Tour.

While Donald Glover has remained as busy as ever with his award-winning acting and filmmaking endeavors in recent years (AtlantaMr. & Mrs. SmithSwarmLando, etc.), Childish Gambino has been quiet since the start of the early days of the pandemic. Back on March 15th, 2020, Glover surprised fans by issuing a collection of unheard material via DonaldGloverPresents.com. Only two of the songs—”Time” and “Algorythm”—had titles, while the rest were labeled with their corresponding start time on the album. Soon after, he uploaded the collection to streaming services as 3.15.20 with a blank white panel as the cover art.

While 3.15.20 was generally well-received by critics, it failed to make the same commercial impact as prior Gambino efforts like his universally acclaimed 2016 LP Awaken, My Love or his multiple Grammy-winning 2018 smash single/video, “This Is America“. In an interview with Complex in 2023, Gambino explained his reasoning for the unusual release of 3.15.20: “I had just lost my father, I had just had a kid, and I was going through a lot. I was having a lot of different new experiences and that’s what I expressed. I think people are right. It would have garnered a different [response]. My wife’s always been like, ‘If you do punk things, you get punk results.’ And it was a punk thing.”

After pulling 3.15.20 from streaming services last week, Childish Gambino on Monday released a “finished” version of the album, Atavista, in its place. As he added in a social media post, “there’s a special vinyl coming soon w/ visuals for each song.” Along with touched-up sonics and other tweaks, the 11-track Atavista includes the same guest appearances as the unfinished version (Ariana Grande, Kadhja Bonet, 21 Savage, and Ink) while incorporating new features from Young Nudy and Summer Walker. Although the album art remains mostly white, it now features the subtle inclusion of the new title in grey outlined letters. Listen to Atavista by Childish Gambino via the player below.

In the same post, Childish Gambino posted the link to a new official music video for “Little Foot Big Foot” (originally titled “35.31”). The black-and-white video, directed by Glover’s frequent visual collaborator, Hiro Murai, casts Glover as an eager chitlin’ circuit performer and Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary creator/star Quinta Brunson as the manager of the gritty club where he hopes to perform. Once again juxtaposing Gambino’s sunny physical expressiveness and penchant for dark and surreal themes (à la “This Is America”), the video is yet another engrossing chapter in the long history of collaboration between Glover and Murai. Below, watch the new video for “Little Foot Big Foot” by Childish Gambino—the first of eleven promised Atavista music videos.

In addition to the new and scheduled releases, Childish Gambino on Monday detailed his first run of tour dates in five years, the aptly named New World Tour. The global arena outing, produced by AEG Presents, will begin on August 11th, 2024 at Oklahoma City, OK’s Paycom Center and circle North America until the beginning of October. From there, Childish Gambino will head overseas for shows in Europe and the U.K. lasting through early December ahead of an early-2025 swing through Australia and New Zealand.
