Venerated Cajun slamgrass unit Leftover Salmon made the pilgrimage to New Orleans for a show during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival where the band welcomed Roosevelt Collier for a tribute to late Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts. Salmon’s late-night show at the Joy Theater on Thursday, May 2nd also featured an appearance from local washboard wizard Chaz Leary, a.k.a Washboard Chaz.

Leftover Salmon welcomed celebrated steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier midway through the band’s marathon 15-song one-set performance. Washboard Chaz had already visited the stage by this point, joining in on a stellar run of New Orleans fare with “Madame Boudreaux” > “Brother John” > “Iko Iko” > “Madame Boudreaux” for a little Chaz Fest, as Salmon frontman Vince Herman quipped.

Chaz subbed out for Collier, who made his presence known during a 20-minute take on the banjo tune “Bird Call”. In total, Collier’s three-song sit-in amounted to nearly 40 minutes as Leftover Salmon tossed yet another musical style into the band’s unique auditory gumbo. Collier’s sacred steel guitar playing propelled LoS through an upbeat “Unplug that Telephone” before Herman took a moment to remember the late Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts who passed away last month at age 80.

With Roosevelt bringing to mind fellow late great Allman Brothers guitarist Duane Allman on slide guitar, the band sent up “You Don’t Love Me” as a tribute to Dickey. A Willie Cobb original, the blues cover appeared on the Allman Brothers’ seminal 1971 live album At Fillmore East, considered by many one of the greatest live albums of all time. Though Salmon’s nine-minute version didn’t stretch out quite as long as ABB’s 19-minute recording on At Fillmore East, the cover was still a fitting tribute to the man whose tone and style of guitar playing helped define Southern rock. Salmon also included a cover of “Honky Tonk Women” in its set, nodding to The Rolling Stones who played earlier that same day at Jazz Fest.

Leftover Salmon’s next show is a set at DelFest in Cumberland, MD on May 25th, kicking off a run of Midwestern festival appearances and headlining dates.
