Widespread Panic continued its steady stream of new material on Friday with the band’s latest single, “Cosmic Confidante”. The track marks the band’s fifth new release of the year, following a nine-year lapse in new original studio recordings.
“Cosmic Confidante” eases in with an intro reminiscent of Nirvana‘s “Something in the Way”. Singer-guitarist John Bell creeps in with his soft, smokey drawl over gentle acoustic and light electric guitars and a simple drum pitter-patter from Duane Trucks. Overall, the song doesn’t build to much beyond a low rabble at the end, instead striking a pensive, contemplative tone indicative of Widespread Panic’s well-earned wistfullness at this stage of its existence. In that manner, the song is similar to the reflective nature of recent single “We Walk Each Other Home” and joins “Little By Little“, “Tackle Box Hero“, and “Life as a Tree” among the band’s new 2024 releases. Though not yet officially confirmed by the band, bassist Dave Schools did say that Widespread Panic has recorded a new album and some online retailers are listing an LP called Snake Oil King due out June 14th.
Once again, Widespread Panic has shared a new single on the precipice of a weekend run, this one in Memphis, TN. Presented by Mempho Music Festival, where Panic has been a frequent headliner over the years, the special Memorial Day Weekend two-night engagement will feature support from country singer-songwriters Margo Price (5/24) and Paul Cauthen (5/25). Panic previously put out “We Walk Each Other Home” at what was supposed to be the dawn of its Chicago run, though the three-night engagement was thwarted by a health hiccup from Dave Schools that briefly landed the 59-year-old bassist in the hospital. Arriving hours after the cancellation, the single release felt more like a consolation prize whereas, hopefully, this weekend audiences will have their Panic and eat it too.

Next month, Panic will open for The Rolling Stones at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver before mounting its traditional Red Rocks Amphitheatre run.
