Marie Ulven, the lead singer of Girl in Red made an emotional connection with the nearly sold out show last night at The Greek. She is surviving and thriving and spoke honestly and openly of her recent mental illness struggles and life in therapy.
Ulven’s songwriting chronicles depression, relationships, break ups and being a proud part of the LGBTQ community. She had the audience dancing the whole night and singing along to every song. She radiates an ethereal exuberance and the crowd visibly related to her music. She mentioned several times how grateful she was to be there and the whole vibe was love and acceptance.
The twenty five year old Norwegian singer, songwriter and producer has been gathering critical acclaim since she recorded two EPs in her bedroom and then released a full length album in 2021 called If I Could Make it Go Quiet. That album garnered three Norwegian Grammy awards. The album had her lauded by the likes of Paper who dubbed her a queer icon, and by the New York Times who noted that she is an exciting entrant into the guitar music universe. She has since sold five million digital units in the US and was awarded the Telenor Culture Prize for “artistic distinctiveness and explicit messages of boundless love.”
The opening act was the Toronto based, all girl band, The Beaches who warmed up the audience with a bubbly and infectiously fun set. By the smiles on their faces, it was obvious that they were having as good a time on stage as we did watching.
