Goose celebrated the largest headlining show of the band’s career on Friday with a sit-in by Blind Melon guitarist Rogers Stevens on the band’s chart-topper “No Rain”. The concert at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, capacity 14,000, also saw an appearance by Mt. Joy frontman Matt Quinn who provided guest vocals on the “California Magic” that immediately followed “No Rain”.

Stevens emerged midway through a brisk first set that moved with agility through “The Whales” > “Silver Rising” and “Atlas Dogs” > “Flodown”. The relatively concise runtimes of these first four songs—”Flodown” the longest at 11 minutes—could perhaps be attributed to the revolving door of special guests.

“We’re gonna invite a friend to the stage—and a legend,” multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach quickly corrected himself in introducing the first guest, “please give it up for Rogers Stevens of Blind Melon.”

Gibson Les Paul in hand, Stevens took the stage beside a group of musicians who more than likely do not remember Blind Melon’s meteoric rise to the top thanks to its 1992 smash hit “No Rain”. Regardless of their childhood memories, the men of Goose have taken a liking to “No Rain” and have performed it now 17 times since 2018, per ElGoose.net. Around this time last year, the band used it as a platform for another guest sit-in when The Revivalists‘ main man David Shaw joined in for the cover at Daze Between New Orleans during Jazz Fest. After guitarist Rick Mitarotonda and company graciously ceded the spotlight to their guest for a couple solos, Stevens and Mitarotonda locked into a dual guitar jam as the musicians pushed the song to its peak—the similarities in their polished guitar tones combining their sound into one.
