If you aren’t big on sports or semi-ironically enjoying ’90s butt rock, you might not be aware that the MLB’s Texas Rangers have a love affair with “Higher” by Creed. Whether propelled by Scott Stapps‘ guttural vocals or third baseman Josh Smith‘s .294 batting average and pitcher Andrew Heaney‘s 151 strikeouts, the Rangers won their first-ever World Series championship in 2023. Every superstitious athlete and sports fan knows not to mess with your mojo, so the Texas Rangers are keeping up their love of Creed and on Monday invited a mariachi band to cover “Higher” during a game against the New York Mets.

Monday marked the latest installment of the Ranger’s “Mariachi Monday” program, featuring the MLB’s only official mariachi band, Mariachi de los Texas Rangers. The “Mariachi Monday” series has provided in-game entertainment at Rangers games since 2018, following the club to its new home of Globe Life Field in 2020.

While already known as an institution in Texas, the Mariachi de los Texas Rangers made a lasting impression across the country as videos of the Creed cover quickly went viral on social media. Dressed in traditional charro suits, the ensemble takes Florida-bred Creed’s most popular song south of the border as the singer croons and the song’s melodic hook translates to trumpets. Unfortunately, the cover did little to galvanize the Rangers who fell 14-2 to the Mets.

The obsession with “Higher” has been mutually beneficial for both the Rangers and Creed, with the song seeing a 175% jump in Spotify streams after the baseball team revealed that they listen to it before games. The band has gone through a number of breakups and hiatuses over the past 30 years, most recently hitting pause from 2013 until 2023—conveniently when the “Higher” fervor began. In February, the band released a seven-song compilation Stadium Anthems featuring such sports PA regulars as “With Arms Wide Open”, “My Sacrifice”, and, of course, “Higher”.  Creed even appeared at Globe Life Field last year to cheer on the Texas Rangers in game three of the American League Championship Series, leading the stadium in a singalong of its resurgent hit.
