Phil Lesh is back with the next installment of his never-ending Darkstarathon jam.
The fourth episode of the continuous “Dark Star” jam features guitarist Stu Allen, keyboardist Jason Crosby, drummer John Molo, and multi-instrumentalist Barry Sless, who plays guitar in the session after recently being featured on pedal steel in Lesh’s Clubhouse Sessions episode 4 alongside bluegrass luminary and Jerry Garcia‘s former Old & In the Way bandmate Peter Rowan.
“Part of the deal is, everybody has the power to suggest a song,” Lesh tells the group at the start of the session. “So if we’re in the right key, and if you hear the groove or something, start playing the song. and hopefully the rest of us will jump on it. If you have a really really strong feeling, figure out a way to change the key so we’ll be with you already, you know? It’s okay. I don’t wanna have to be the only one changing.”
Picking up where the previous episode left off with a “previously on” flashback, the jam consists primarily of instrumental improvisation, with subtle teases of “Playing in the Band” and detours through “Ramble on Rose” and “Jack-A-Roe” before coming to an extemporaneous conclusion.
“It won’t stop!” Lesh jokingly exclaims at the end of the session.
