A little rain couldn’t dampen the laid-back mood on Wednesday in Columbus, OH where Khruangbin played its new album A La Sala from start to finish. The outdoor show at KEMBA Live! in the Buckeye State capital was part of Khruangbin’s 55-date global tour in support of its first new studio album in four years and featured support from pianist-producer John Carroll Kirby.
Ahead of the concert, Khruangbin took to social media to inform attendees that “due to the potential of inclement weather, we will be moving showtimes this evening to accommodate Mother Nature.” The evening’s program was moved up 30 minutes, with doors opening at 6 p.m, Kirby taking the stage at 7 p.m., and Khruangbin headlining at 8 p.m. As intermittent showers scattered throughout the state Khruangbin took concert attendees on a global adventure, exploring internationally-influenced funk, dub, light psych, and much more.

It makes sense that Khruangbin is so proud enough of A La Sala and has played it for the first set every night of the tour so far. In addition to marking the latest stylistic development of the band’s trademark sound with healthy explorations of other genres, it also marks Khruangbin’s first original studio release since 2020’s Mordechai. In the intervening years, Khruangbin issued a second EP with fellow Texan Leon Bridges, globe-hopped to Mali for a tribute album with Vieux Farka Touré, and released five live albums. Now the band is back to running the show on its first tour since 2022, filling the first set with A La Sala and the second set with classics from throughout its growing catalog like “Dern Kala”, “Lady and Man”, “Maria También”, and an explosive “People Everywhere (Still Alive)” encore finale.
