Trey Anastasio reprised his collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra last night at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA.
More than a decade after the pair played a sold-out concert at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the one-night engagement featured the Phish guitarist performing original music arranged for a full orchestra on a mix of electric and acoustic guitar and vocals. The program included Phish songs like “Divided Sky” and “You Enjoy Myself”, whose extended composed sections lend themselves to symphonic interpretation, and danceable fan favorites like “First Tube” and “Stash” that had the fully seated audience moving.
“Petrichor”, which Anastasio premiered with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra in 2014, and “What’s The Use” were other highlights of the two-set performance, which concluded with a two-song encore comprised of an acoustic “The Inlaw Josie Wales” and Gamehendge fanfare “The Lizards”.
