Life is full of what-ifs. What if your parents never met? What if you picked a different career? What if our entire existence is nothing more than a simulation providing entertainment for some higher being? Or, what if the world’s most popular metal band, Metallica, embraced its California roots and became a surf rock band instead? Well, luckily, humanity must wonder no longer thanks to producer/multi-instrumentalist Cloudchord.
The producer behind The Disco Biscuits‘ Revolution in Motion has recently dug into the world of heavy metal hypotheticals with a series of YouTube videos imagining what various bands would sound like in the style of surf. Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” launched the series back in May, and so far Cloudchord has also reimagined Rage Against The Machine‘s “Killing in the Name“, Megadeath‘s “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due“, Ozzy Osbourne‘s “Crazy Train“, Judas Priest‘s “Breaking the Law“, and Motörhead‘s “Ace of Spades“, as well as The Doors‘ “Riders on the Storm“. In addition to being the first of the series, the surf “Master of Puppets” is also the most popular and has amassed over 600,000 views on TikTok thanks to a repost by Metallica itself.
“When I was 15 my dad implored me to find the connection between metal guitar I was playing with my garage bands and surf guitar that he grew up listening to, and he told me there was a connection,” Cloudchord said of his motivation for the surf series. “So Dad, this one’s for you.”
