A GoFundMe has been set up to help provide support for longtime Grateful Dead lighting designer Candace Brightman.

According to the campaign page, which was set up by audio engineer and archivist Charlie Miller, Brightman is having financial and medical issues. “She’s becoming weak and unable to fully take care of herself,” the call to action states, “and she can’t afford to hire people to help her.”

Brightman spent more than 20 years running lights for the Grateful Dead after initially being recruited by Bill Graham to work at The Fillmore East. The improvisational approach she developed to complement the band helped set the standard for live light design and inspired LDs like Phish‘s Chris Kuroda. Most recently, she oversaw the design of the Dead’s Fare The Well 50th anniversary shows.

Brightman’s impact on the Grateful Dead community and live music production is evident in the outpouring of support and appreciation that the GoFundMe has already garnered. Fans and industry vets have rallied behind her and, at the time of publication, surpassed the campaign’s $50,000 goal.

Messages left along with contributions express love and gratitude for Candace’s work over the years, with many offering reflections on the ways Brightman has made all of our lives a little brighter.
