The Grateful Dead have announced the release of an extensive new live box set, Friend Of The Devils: April 1978, due out on September 20th via Rhino.

The 19CD collection is limited to 10,000 individually numbered copies, available exclusively via Dead.net, and features eight complete concerts from April 1978, which marked a period of creative exploration for the Dead following the band’s return from hiatus in ’76.

“These eight shows tell the story of a band that was engaged, inspired, and focused on bringing their A-game every single night,” band archivist David Lemieux said. “If there was ever a tour on which the Dead deliver every single moment, it’s this one.”

Originally captured by Betty Cantor-Jackson and mastered by Jeffrey Norman using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction, the recordings document the emergence of “Drums” > “Space” as a permanent, central feature of the band’s shows.

Drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart were frequently joined during this time by members of the band’s crew for their extended rhythmic explorations, originally dubbed “Rhythm Devils” by Hart, including Steve Parish, who played cowbell on 4/12/78 at Duke University’s Cameron Indoor Stadium. Jerry Garcia even joined the Rhythm Devils that night, swapping his trusty guitar for a set of steel pans. That concert will be released as a separate live album, Duke ’78, in 3CD, 4LP, and digital configurations along with the box set on September 20th.

The Grateful Dead Friend Of The Devils: April 1978 box set comes in a custom box designed by Steve Vance and features a removable wave drum, with original artwork by acclaimed artist Matthew Brannon. The deluxe collection also includes a 48-page book, with liner notes by author Steve Silberman and photos by James Anderson, Bob Minkin, and more.

Fans can get a preview of the box set and the Duke University show now with “U.S. Blues”. Stream the song below or on your preferred streaming platform.
