Phish fans all over the country are getting ready for Mondegreen, the band’s first curated festival in almost a decade, next month in Dover, DE. Those roughing it in a field from August 15th to 18th have tents, canopies, coolers, camping chairs, sleeping bags, and a whole lot more to gather up and load into the car. Those riding in style in an RV have a much shorter packing list and many more comforts of home, and those staying in a hotel only have to worry about whether they’ll be able to catch an Uber after the secret set. But whether you’re camping, hoteling, or staying in an RV, everyone faces the same dilemma of what they will do from each day in Dover until Phish hits the stage (7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; 6:30 p.m. on Sunday). Luckily, Phish has you covered with a new list of daytime activities for Mondegreen.
A Phish festival tradition is set to return at Mondegreen with The 103rd Running of The First Annual Runaway Jim Marathon. This will mark the third Phish festival 5k, following races at IT in 2003 and Super Ball IX in 2011. Magnaball in 2015 did not host a run as the racetrack at Watkins Glen International was under repair and as for 2018’s Curveball, well, you know. This year’s 5k will occur on Friday, August 16th at 9:00 a.m. Runners can register here, and attendees are encouraged to show up and cheer them on.

Another staple of Phish festivals is larger-than-life and oftentimes immersive art installations. From the giant match igniting a pile of art at The Great Went to the Big Cypress boardwalk, the Lemonwheel elephant to the fire sculptures of Festival 8, and of course the “mime field” that wasn’t meant to be at the canceled Curveball, Phish has always prioritized transporting its festival patrons back to an age of childlike innocence with grand exhibitions. While many of these will remain a secret until attendees arrive at The Woodlands, we do know there will be a city hall constructed entirely out of cardboard boxes and duct tape.
Internationally renowned French visual artist Olivier Grossetete is asking for a team of volunteers to help build the city hall out of 1,850 boxes and 18 miles of tape, rising to an 88-foot “community-performance-architectural structure” that will weigh up to 1.5 tons. The building will take place from Wednesday, August 7th, to Wednesday, August 14th (off on Monday, August 12th), so it will be ready for opening day on Thursday and be on display through the festival finale on Sunday. Those who volunteer for one day will receive a single-day General Admission Mondegreen pass, while those who volunteer two or more days will receive a four-day weekend General Admission pass.
More conventional activities include a cornhole tournament happening all weekend long at GA Camping North and South hubs. Find a partner and come toss, no prior registration required. Those looking to make some nutritious campsite meals can stop by the Farmers Market (thank you for not using Ph-) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. The Farmers Market will be located in the Farmhaüs, an elevated, air-conditioned food hall with food, beer, and coffee from Vermont vendors.
Attendees can also stay up on current events happening around the festival with The Daily Greens, the official Mondegreen newspaper published daily by Relix. Free copies will be available at Camping Pods, Camping Hubs, Guest Services, and General Stores throughout the festival grounds. Finally, fans can take it all in from the scenic heights of the festival’s Ferris wheel, open from noon to midnight on Thursday and 9 a.m. to midnight Friday through Sunday.
