PHISH wasted no time setting the theme in the Great Woods of Mansfield, Massachusetts at the Xfinity Center last weekend. The theme they set was heavy jams and solid setlists that included many new songs from their latest album “Evolve”.
After picking up the pieces of Harry Hood the night before everyone was in a great mood heading into night 2. “Theme From the Bottom” put us “Back on the Train” that showed no signs of stopping! “Sand” had us all equating our lives as we “Bounced Around the Room” that time then, and once again “Backwards Down the Number Line”. Phans were about to learn for the first time about “Human Nature”.

Great Woods was still heating up and the band added more fuel with “It’s Ice.” The crowd howled to the full buck moon with the “Wolfman’s Brother” then Trey melodically sang “Drift While You’re Sleeping” from his solo repertoire.

Second set showed us the rare “You Enjoy Myself” opener as fans were like “Boy”, “Man”, “God”, & “Shit”! This rare second set opener really took the crowd into “Oblivion” from the new album “Evolve”. It was back to the Big Boat for “No Men in No Man’s Land”. “Easy now Easy now, I wake up in my bed with “Monsters” in my head”. This new song “Monsters” off Evolve is a song that fans couldn’t stop talking about and especially Trey Anastasios absolute shredding on his signature Languedoc guitar. Set two finished up with a cover of Richard Strauss’s” Also sprach Zarathustra, op. 30” and “Chalk Dust Torture”.

Anastasio joked about not coming out for an encore in the future, before playing not one but three songs for the encore that were. “When the Circus comes to Town”, the famed “David Bowie”, and to know you were there and space smells like the rocking “Say It to Me S.A.N.T.O.S.”

Sunday Phunday was Phinally upon us as the band led us right into “Free” was this a “Wave of Hope” were feeling? No, it was the water from the “Bathtub Gin” overflowing with possibilities but in the end, we were all shouting for our main man “Wilson” for we have this kind of “Connection”, a “Thread” if you will. This connection wants us to be happy and filled us up with nothing but an emotional “Joy”. The dog never ages older than 119 in “Runaway Jim” and a little percussion rinse “Life Saving Gun” from Evolve finished set one.

The second set opened with “The Squirming Coil”, as the crowd stepped into the freezer with old uncle Ebeneezer with “Tweezer”. Oh the “Scents and Subtle Sounds” that filled the Mansfield air took us to a twirling “Twist” as the band broke out the Talking Heads “Crosseyed and Painless” everyone was still waiting, even Walfredo (Where did he go?) would we all be “Slaves to the Traffic Lights” after the show or would the “Possum” make us swerve back into the freezer for the “Tweezer Reprise”
