Slightly Stoopid and Dirty Heads are on the road on their joint Slightly Dirty Summer Tour, stopping in New Jersey over the weekend where the former of the two Cali reggae mainstays covered the Grateful Dead‘s “Franklin’s Tower”. The nationwide trek also includes support from The Elovaters and Common Kings and features nightly collaborations at outdoor amphitheaters across the country.

Slightly Stoopid and Dirty Heads switch off nightly headlining duties for the Slightly Dirty Summer Tour, and on Friday at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, closing honors went to Dirty Heads. Heads of a different variety had a high time during Slightly Stoopid’s set, however, as the band dished out its trademark reggae cover of the Grateful Dead‘s “Franklin’s Tower”. Stoopid’s connection to the Dead dates back to 2008 when the band shared a cover of “I Know You Rider” on its odds-and-ends collection, Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid. In 2011, the band was invited to Bob Weir‘s state-of-the-art TRI Studios in San Rafael, where they recorded Live at Roberto’s, which featured guest contributions from Karl DensonIvan and Ian Neville, Don Carlos, and Bobby himself, who joined in on “I Know You Rider”. Five years later, Stoopid returned to TRI Studios where the band enlisted Weir’s help once again, this time to debut its cover of “Franklin’s Tower”, which has remained a setlist staple ever since.

Elsewhere in Slightly Stoopid’s 17-song set, the band welcomed guest contributions from Common Kings’ JR King, bassist Tye Zamora (Alien Ant Farm), and seminal rapper/frequent collaborator Chali 2na. The Jurrasic 5 MC has made an annual tradition of sitting in with Stoopid when the band comes to town, joining the band on “Hands High” just as he did the year prior.
