Teenage Joans have returned with their first new music of 2024, a stand-alone single entitled ‘Infitada’. The track, however, will not be available on any streaming services – instead, it is available solely on their Bandcamp page, with all proceeds going to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The band have released the song independently as a protest against the ongoing genocide of Palestinians as enacted by the Israeli government – a cause that was also taken up by fellow Australian act The Herd last month, with their own protest song ‘Soul Of My Soul’. In a press statement, the band said they felt it was “important as a punk band” to do so.
“Punk isn’t a genre, it’s a movement,” they said. “It’s about standing up for human rights, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and their right to live in peace.” The band shared a snippet of the song to their social media pages, focusing on the lyrics: “My favourite singer hasn’t said a fucking thing/My favourite celebrity hasn’t said a fucking thing/Millions of fans, dollars, and A-grade security teams/But my favourite singer hasn’t said a fucking thing.”
Teenage Joans – ‘Intifada’
Concluding their statement, the band encouraged their fans to “really listen to the lyrics, stay educated on the topic, and donate if you can afford to do so”. “Showing your support is so important, no matter how big or small your voice,” they said. “Share information wherever you can – every voice has power.”
Teenage Joans began 2024 with a series of screenings of a short film accompanying their debut album, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest. They performed on triple j‘s Like a Version in March, covering Carly Rae Jepsen‘s ‘Call Me Maybe’, before touring the US in support of Noah Finnce. They will undertake a co-headlining regional tour with Between You & Me next month before returning to the US in September to support Sleeping With Sirens on a national tour.
