Widespread Panic on Sunday revealed that longtime guitarist Jimmy Herring has been recently diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer. As a result, the band has canceled its three-night run in Asheville, NC—set for July 25th–27th, 2024—so that he may immediately begin treatment.

“The Widespread Panic Family is sad to report that our Brother, Jimmy Herring, has been diagnosed with stage 1 tonsil cancer,” the band wrote on social media. “He will begin treatment immediately and is expected to make a full recovery. That part we’re happy to report. The Band will not be playing the upcoming Asheville dates. We will have a clearer picture of our future concert schedule in the next few days.”

Widespread Panic’s 2024 tour schedule is set to continue August 22nd–24th with the band’s first visit to Boston in nearly a decade. Elsewhere on the calendar, Panic has its annual trip to Las Vegas (9/20–9/22), three nights in Milwaukee that are already sold out three months in advance (10/25–10/27), and another Halloween celebration in Savannah, GA (11/1–11/2).

“We thank everyone for their concern and Blessings as Jimmy and his Family go through this healing process,” the band concluded. “Let the Healing begin.”

Beyond the immediate concern for Herring and his family, this news strikes close to the heart of Panic fans. Herring joined the band in 2006 shortly after founding guitarist Michael Houser died of pancreatic cancer in 2002. Since then, he has carried on the legacy of both Houser and Widespread Panic as a whole, appearing on four studio albums—including this year’s Snake Oil King—and playing hundreds of shows with the band through three decades.

Get well soon, Jimmy!
