Two giants of the electronic music world came together last night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre as Pretty Lights welcomed legendary producer Tipper for a surprise onstage collaboration.
Pretty Lights, born Derek Vincent Smith, has expressed admiration for Dave Tipper over the years, and the pair has performed on shared bills in the past, including some monumental shows in PL lore like San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in November 2013 and The Gorge Amphitheatre in August 2017. Nonetheless, Friday’s sit-in shocked fans due to Tipper’s reclusive reputation. The beloved producer, who recently left fans shook after announcing his retirement from performing, rarely makes such guest appearances, or any public appearances for that matter. His presence at Red Rocks was therefore all the more meaningful and seemed to signal a deep respect for Smith, who recently returned from a hiatus of his own.
Along with the Pretty Lights live band comprised of Chris Karns (turntables), Alvin Ford Jr. (drums), Borahm Lee (keyboards), and Michal Menert (production), the pair played “Tepid Bile”, the first song from Tipper’s 2005 album Tip Hop, which saw him deviate from his glitch- and breaks-based style into something influenced by U.S. hip-hop—a shape-shifting release in the annals of modern day electronic music. The song choice was a subtle way of both honoring Dave’s peerless career and also letting fans know that Derek has been down with Tipper for a long time.

Later this month, Tipper will host a three-night Tipper & Friends run at Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville, AL. He is also scheduled to headline Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, FL alongside The String Cheese Incident, Sublime, Umphrey’s McGee, and more in October. Pretty Lights recently confirmed a two-night run at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena in October and a two-night festival-style camping event at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.
