Stanford University Expands Grateful Dead Curriculum With New Course Taught By David Gans

A new continuing studies course offered by Stanford University will expand on a previous class taught by David Gans covering the music, history, and cultural impact of the Grateful Dead.

Did It Matter? Does It Now? The Music and Culture of the Grateful Dead is an eight-week, live online course featuring stories and conversations with scholars and historians, in-depth guided listening sessions, and more.

“We’ll examine the Dead’s impact on society, diving into the band’s influence on art, literature, and social change, as well as its unique fan culture and the phenomenon of the Deadhead,” the class description reads. “By the end of the course, students will have a well-rounded appreciation for the roots, struggles, and milestones that shaped the Grateful Dead’s trajectory, an understanding of their profound impact on music and culture, and insight into a legacy that still resonates deeply today.”

The course will feature a number of notable guest speakers including Blair Jackson, author of Garcia: An American Life and Grateful Dead GearJesse Jarnow, author and producer/host of The Good Ol’ Grateful DeadcastGary Lambert, co-host of SiriusXM’s Tales from the Golden RoadDennis McNally, former Grateful Dead publicist and author of A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful DeadMark Pinkus, president of Rhino Records; and David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager.

Textbooks for the course include Blair Jackson and David Gans’ This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead, Blair Jackson’s Garcia : An American Life, Dennis McNally’s A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead and Rosie McGee‘s, Dancing with the Dead—A Photographic Memoir.

Registration for Did It Matter? Does It Now? The Music and Culture of the Grateful Dead is open now. The course will take place once a week on Thursdays at 5:30–7:20 p.m. PT from October 3rd until December 5th. For more information and to register, head here.
