Tedeschi Trucks Band honored local legend Prince in his native Minneapolis on Friday by debuting a cover of “1999” during the band’s first of two nights at the Minneapolis Armory.

After opening the show with regulars “I Want More”, “Hear My Dear”, and “Anyhow”, Tedeschi Trucks Band unveiled its reworked version of the title track to Prince’s 1982 album. Vocalist Mike Mattison took the lead on this one, slowing Prince’s pop hit with The Revolution down to a bluesy crawl more suited to TTB’s swamp style. The band replaces the synths that pump up the original version with blasts from the horn section—with Derek Trucks filling the spaces between lyrics with his slide guitar.

Prince wasn’t the only Minnesotan to whom TTB paid tribute on Friday, as later on in the show the band brought out opener Margo Price for a pair of Bob Dylan covers. Price had been on the road with Tedeschi Trucks Band for over a week before the band finally invited her out for a sit-in. Price made up for lost time with renditions of the classic “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and the deeper Basement Tapes cut “Down in the Flood”, a remnant of The Derek Trucks Band‘s catalog.
