Former Allman Brothers Band bandmates Derek Trucks and Jaimoe reconnected on Friday for the Tedeschi Trucks Band concert in Connecticut. On TTB’s first of two nights at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, the blues-jam stalwart brought out the founding ABB drummer for selections from the Allmans’ classic catalog and beyond.

Friday’s show began with an instrumental drum solo from Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady that doubled as a drumroll introduction for Jaimoe. Trucks and Jaimoe played alongside one another for 15 years in the Allman Brothers Band, from when Derek joined the band in 1999 at just 20 years old until the band’s final show on October 28th, 2014 at the Beacon Theatre in New York. After navigating a swampy cover of Dr. John‘s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”, Trucks and Jaimoe threw it back to their ABB days with a cover of Blind Willie McTell‘s classic “Statesboro Blues”, with Susan Tedeschi once again proving Derek isn’t the only six-string savant in the family as she handled the bluesy solo.

Jaimoe left the stage following “Statesboro Blues”, though perhaps the band was trying to coax him back out with an Allmans-heavy setlist which included “Mountain Jam” and “Come and Go Blues”. As the Tedeschi Trucks Band segued out of Aretha Franklin‘s “It Ain’t Fair”—which famously featured Duane Allman on slide guitar—the drummer was again summoned to the stage by the trembling intro to ABB’s “Dreams”. Though this would mark Jaimoe’s final appearance of the evening, opener Margo Price got into the percussive spirit when she sat in on drums during the “Let’s Go Get Stoned” encore that closed the show.

Performances by the 80-year-old Jaimoe have become rare in recent years, with the drummer going almost 18 months without publicly performing until the death of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts earlier this year. Following the iconic guitarist’s passing in April, Jaimoe played a one-off show with ABB tribute Friends of the Brothers that snowballed into a four-show tour through the Northeast. In the wake of Betts’ death, Jaimoe became the sole surviving original member of the Allman Brothers Band.

Watch Jaimoe join Tedeschi Trucks Band on “Statesboro Blues” and “Dreams” in Bridgeport, CT on Friday. The band’s Deuces Wild Tour rolls through next week with tour dates across the Northeast. Find tickets and a full list of concerts on TTB’s website.
