Country Music Hall of Fame singer-songwriter and Golden Globe-winning actor Krist Kristofferson has passed away at the age of 88.
As reported by a spokesperson (via Consequence Of Sound), Krist Kristofferson died “peacefully in his home in Maui, Hawaii on Saturday, September 28th, surrounded by family”.
“When you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
Kristofferson’s family announced the sad news on his official social media pages, asking for privacy during their time of mourning.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28 at home,” their statement read. “We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
Kristofferson was best known for writing and performing classic songs like ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, ‘Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down’ and ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night5’. He has also enjoyed a successful acting career, starring in films like A Star is Born (1976), which earned him a Golden Globe Award.
He was also part of country supergroup The Highwaymen, alongside fellow greats Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, who released a trio of albums between 1985 and 1995.
Over the course of his career, Kristofferson was nominated for a total 13 Grammy Awards and took home three. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985, the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004, and scored a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
