Goose continued its ongoing fall tour on Thursday with its second of three nights at Chicago, IL’s The Salt Shed featuring a two-song sit-in from revered jazz guitarist Julian Lage.
After beginning the evening’s first of two sets with live staple “Mr. Action”, recent debut “Draconian Meter Maid“, and an “’80s synth version” of early-days Goose favorite “Indian River”, Goose—comprised of Rick Mitarotonda (guitar, vocals), Peter Anspach (guitar, keys, vocals), Trevor Weekz (bass), Jeff Arevalo (percussion, guitar, vocals), and Cotter Ellis (drums, vocals—brought Julian Lage to the stage to go toe-to-toe with Mitarotonda for exploratory takes on “A Western Sun” and “Turned Clouds”.

The collaboration with the decorated guitarist and former child prodigy seemed to energize Goose for set two. Following set break, the band came out swinging with a wily “Yeti” that took a detour through the first Goose rendition of Foster The People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks” since 2022 before returning to the mythical beast from whence it came. Things continued to heat up from there with a jagged “Thatch” and an emotive “Red Bird” ahead of an oft-chased “Factory Fiction” closer. After spending most of the night with the gas pedal floored, Goose returned to the stage one last time to change up the pace with a pensive “Slow Ready”. [Note: Someone check on Bert Kreischer.]
