King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s dominion as kings of rock music shows no signs of faltering any time soon. The Australian band made that vehemently clear on Thursday during a sold-out show at The Factory on the outskirts of St. Louis for its latest 2024 North American tour stop.

Thursday’s show was not billed as one of Gizz’s “3-Hour Marathon Sets,” but Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood, and Michael Cavanagh did play late into the night for their Midwest fans with a sprawling performance that showcased various gems from their unparalleled catalog of material.

Following a brief but lively opening set from Geese, King Gizzard took the stage promptly at 9 p.m. to rowdy applause worthy of the conquering heroes they’ve become. The show opened with the adrenaline-pumping renditions of “Mars for the Rich”, “Venusian 1”, and “Organ Farmer” from 2019’s metal-leaning Infest the Rats’ Nest. The opening songs gave guitarists Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker the chance to unleash their thrash-inspired shredding all over the faces of their hungry fans.

The high intensity continued with “Flamethrower” from 2023’s PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation, and by then the audience was lubed up enough to unleash their own fury in the mosh pit.

Without missing a beat, Gizz took a hard left into a more psychedelic direction with “Minimum Brain Size” into “Automation” from 2020’s KG featuring their Eastern-inspired rhythms and microtonal tunings. After that, however, it was back to face-melting with a long and hard rendition of “Rattlesnake”, a song the band has transformed into a lengthy, jam-inspired live vehicle since its arrival back in 2017.

The band then brought out a table filled with analog synths and other assorted electronic equipment for an energizing take on Changes (2022) track “Astroturf” featuring some groovy flute playing from Mackenzie, then kept the synth party going with another Changes tune, “Gondii”. This one featured elements of “Shanghai”, forecasting the tour debut of the Butterfly 3000 track that followed in its wake.

The guitars came back out next for rocking renditions of some of the new originals off 2024’s Flight b741 including “Sad Pilot”, “Rats in the Sky”, and “Daily Blues”. The high energy continued with “Sea of Trees”, “Robot Stop”, and “Gamma Knife”, before the a thrilling, furious “People-Vultures” to sent fans home happy and exhausted.
