Maggie Rose got some help from Phish bassist Mike Gordon on Wednesday night when her tour behind her latest LP, No One Gets Alive, tour stopped at Burlington, VT’s Nectar’s.

Midway through the lively performance, Rose mused to the crowd, “It’s super cool when you’re just outside on the street and you run into someone… who’s maybe responsible for a lot of us being on stage and doing music and at all in the first place. So, everybody, Vermont’s own Mike Gordon.”

With that, Gordon strode onto the stage that famously helped launch Phish’s career four decades ago and joined the powerhouse singer and her band for a lively ride through Bee Gees‘ “You Should Be Dancing”. Ahead of the next song, a searing take on The Allman Brothers Band‘s seminal “Whipping Post”, Mike seemed to flash back to his early days playing Nectar’s with Phish.

“The ironic thing is that I played this song on this stage over 90 years ago,” Gordon joked, the exaggerated ending of the memory only partially obscuring the genuine sentiment beneath it. [Note: The first recorded Phish rendition of “Whipping Post” at Nectar’s came in November 1984, a measly 40 years ago.]

Rose and her band were clearly moved by the chance connection with Gordon at Nectar’s, too The singer-songwriter has been outspoken about her Phish fandom in interviews on various occasions. She also recorded a cover of Phish’s “Shade” back in 2020.

Even after Gordon made his exit, the band was clearly feeling the weight of the chance encounter with the Phish bassist. During a rendition of Change the Whole Thing funk vamp “Smooth”, guitarist Kyle Lewis introduced a riff from Phish’s “Stash” into the groove, prompting the rest of the band to follow suit.

On the night before the release of No One Gets Out Alive back in April, Live For Live Music met up with Maggie Rose at a bar in Manhattan during her “ham sandwich moment” to talk about the long road to the new album, how she connected with composer/Phish collaborator Don Hart as the string arranger for the album, catching Phish’s “Gamehendge” show at MSG, and more.
