David Gilmour took a break from his ongoing Luck and Strange Tour run at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening to stop by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for an interview with the host and a performance alongside house band The Roots.
During the interview, Jimmy Fallon probed the Pink Floyd guitarist about his highly publicized comment that his new LP, 2024’s Luck and Strange, was his best work since 1973’s Dark Side of the Moon—an album considered by many to be among the greatest in rock and roll history.
“When we finished Dark Side,” Gilmour reflected, “there was a lot of cross-fades between all the tracks, and they had all to be done separately, and then they all had to be edited in—in the old days, before Pro Tools. When it was finally finished we sat down in the control room at Abbey Road, listened to it all the way through, and wow. I—I guess all of us—had the feeling that it was something quite amazing that we got to. At the same point on [Luck and Strange] I had a very similar feeling, which is why I said that, which might sound a little arrogant, but… To me, this is very special.”

In addition to talking about writing the new album with help from his wife and children, he spoke about a few bits of longtime folklore, from his smoking habits (never) to whether or not he was a model pre-Floyd (yes) to Dark Side of the Moon intentionally synchronizing with The Wizard of Oz.
On the latter, Gilmour explained, “Of course it was,” before laughing and changing course, noting, “I only heard about it years later. If you drop the needle on the third roar of the MGM lions…” When asked if he’d tried playing Dark Side over The Wizard of Oz, Gilmour responded with an enthusiastic, “Yeah! Well now, people have done the donkey work, the chore work, and added it on YouTube, you can watch… and there are these, um, strange coincidences. I’ll call them coincidences. Later, Gilmour linked up with The Roots and a crew of backing vocalists for a live take on Luck and Strange track “Dark and Velvet Nights”. True to its name, the sultry track sounds like a late-night fever dream. On The Tonight Show rendition, Gilmour’s distinctively seductive growl draws you deep into the song’s bleary-eyed narrative, while The Roots’ a bit of extra grit to the admittedly Dark Side-reminiscent instrumentation.
