Following a wild, Stranger Things-themed Halloween bash in St. Petersburg, FL, Goose descended on St. Augustine Amphitheatre for a two-night stand that kept the magic going.
Friday’s show kicked things off with “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet”, setting a mellow, groove-laden mood that would carry through the night. Next came “Butterflies” and “California Magic”, a pair of tunes highlighting the band’s ability to seamlessly shift between dreamy and upbeat vibes. The set took a literary turn with “I’m Writing A Novel”, a Father John Misty cover, followed by “One In, One Out”, which dissolved into a playful take on Devo’s “Whip It”.
The second set opened with the powerful “Big Modern!”, a song that has quickly become a staple of the band’s live repertoire since its debut in September. Goose kept the energy high with “Red Bird”, bringing an improvisational flair before transitioning into a fast-paced rendition of “Echo of a Rose”. The band then acknowledged its jam band heritage and a-Phil-iations with the Grateful Dead‘s “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo”, which resounded with the echo of Phil Lesh‘s recent passing. Closing the set with a soaring “Arcadia”, Goose left the crowd eager for more. For the encore, the band delivered a sultry “Slow Ready”, ending the night with a simmering groove.
Goose – “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet” – 11/1/24
On Saturday night, Goose returned for a second round and upped the ante with a first set that started off with “Turbulence & The Night Rays” before diving into “Draconian Meter Maid” > “Turned Clouds”, a combination that highlighted the band’s skill in weaving intricate transitions. A cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night”—played for the first time in nearly 100 shows—gave fans a chance to sing along. The set closed with the high-energy pairing of “A Western Sun” and “Rockdale”, leaving fans with plenty to talk about during intermission.
For the second set, Goose opened with “Hungersite”, which flowed into a cover of Jim James’ “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)”, adding a soulful depth to the set. The crowd was then swept away by a fiery “Thatch”, and “Dripfield” took a twist with an unfinished jam that morphed into a raucous “Shama Lama Ding Dong” by Otis Day & The Knights, infusing the night with a playful, feel-good vibe.
The encore, “Give it Time”, was a fitting closer, sending fans home with a mellow, reflective tune that captured the essence of Goose’s musical journey over the weekend. Both nights in St. Augustine were filled with unexpected twists, covers that spanned genres, and the kind of energy that makes Goose such a powerful a force in the jam scene.
