Eddie Roberts’ ‘Rare Sounds’ Vinyl Club Tells The Story Of The Funk & Soul Revival

109

Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds is not only a brilliant guitarist, but he’s also a music lover and historian who founded Color Red Music. Roberts uses his vast knowledge to curate Rare Sounds, a vinyl club. Rare Sounds tells the story of the Funk & Soul Revival through classic records that shaped the scene and membership makes the perfect gift for music lovers.

In the 1990s and 2000s, a new breed of bands forged their own sound inspired by the funk, soul, jazz and boogaloo music of the 1960s. The New Mastersounds was among them as were The Greyboy Allstars and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Rare Sounds subscribers, and those who make a one-time purchase, will receive Box #1 — The Essentials featuring three key LPs of the Funk & Soul Revival: Keb Barge Presents The New Mastersounds (2001), Greyboy Allstars’ West Coast Boogaloo (1994) and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ Dap Dippin’ (2002). The package also includes a “Tasting Notes & Anecdotes” booklet with subscribers entitled to exclusive member gifts and “Rare Finds” of records only offered to members of the club.

Read a statement from Roberts shared when the club launched:

Rare Sounds is a new vinyl club that is here to tell the stories of the Funk & Soul Revival, from US to Europe, Japan to Australia. The late ‘90s Revival saw bands like The New Mastersounds, The Greyboy AllStars, Sugarman 3, the Dap-Kings, Galactic, Speedometer, The Bamboos, and Osaka Monaurail, bands of mavericks obsessed with recreating analog production, ‘60s grooves and soul songwriting. Throughout the next three decades, that sound continued to evolve and grow to where we are today. During the coming months, join me on the journey and enjoy some of the most influential records from the last 30 years.

Join Rare Sounds here to get the records that shaped the scene.
