The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Stagger Lee” at Winterland Arena in San Francisco on December 31st, 1978.
In honor of this installment of All The Years Live falling on New Year’s Eve, the Dead have taken viewers back to one of their most famous year-ending concerts ever. December 31st, 1978 marked not only the end of the year but also the end of an era as it was the final concert to take place at Bill Graham‘s legendary Winterland Arena. The Dead played for nearly five total hours as they welcomed special guests including New Riders Of The Purple Sage and the Blues Brothers, who both served as the show’s opening acts.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
Stagger Lee, a Hunter-Garcia take on a classic story song, was played consistently 1978-1995 with the exception of a six year hiatus 1979-1985 (aside from two versions played in August 1982). Its appearance in first sets throughout this era was always a treat.
