Gibson Announces 2021 Lineup Of Signature Guitars From Marcus King, Tom Petty, Slash, More

This week brought a flurry of announcements from guitar manufacturer Gibson as the famed guitar and live audio manufacturer has introduced its new line signature guitars for 2021, including custom instruments from Marcus KingTom PettySlashPeter Frampton, and many more.

The announcement of this year’s signature models comes ahead of the 2021 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) virtual event. The Gibson Experience at NAMM 2021 is set to feature daily interviews, livestream performances, and a full rollout of new products for the new year. James Curleigh, the President and CEO of Gibson brands, is set to give a keynote address with NAMM CEO Joe Lammond on January 22nd at 12 p.m. ET.

The flurry of new product announcements has been divided into a number of categories, including the Gibson Original Collection, Gibson Modern Collection, Gibson Custom Shop, the Custom Shop Murphy Lab, and the Gibson Acoustic and Gibson Acoustic Custom Shop. The Gibson Original Collection will see the revisitation of a number of classic guitar models for 2021, including the Les Paul Standard ’50s and ’60s, and the new Non-reverse Thunderbird Bass.

In the Modern Collection, customers will find a number of artist collaborations including those with Captain Kirk Douglass (The Roots), Slim HarpoGene Simmons, and Slash. The guitarist for The Roots put his own customizations on the classic Gibson SG, while the KISS bassist has put his signature G² stamp on a line of Thunderbird basses and guitars. Meanwhile, Slash has added the “Victoria” Goldtop to the ever-growing Slash Collection, which includes four Les Paul’s and two J-45’s.

The Gibson Custom Historic Collection finds the brand revisiting more timeless classics with the 60th Anniversary 1961 SG Standard with Sideways Vibrola which comes in both cherry red and classic white. More artist collaborations abound with rising guitar virtuoso Marcus King designing his own 1962 E3-345, Peter Frampton a “Phenix” Les Paul Custom VOS, and many more. On the acoustic side, Gibson has produced the Tom Petty SJ-2000 Wildflower as well as the Noel Gallagher J-150 and the Slash Collection J-45 model.

In addition to this wealth of new products, Gibson has also announced the launch of the official Gibson app. The new application is meant to serve musicians of all skill levels with a variety of tools including tuners, an innovative learning method, and a catalog of songs to jam along to. The most innovative part of the app, however, is Audio Augmented Reality (AR). Using this technology, the Gibson app creates a two-way, interactive guitar learning experience that responds to and directs players in real-time.
