Today, NPR has shared the latest entry in their acclaimed Tiny Desk Concert series: a performance by Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles. The soulful seven-piece, led by church-reared Hammond organ virtuoso Cory Henry, performed three songs for the memorable performance: the newly released single “Love Will Find A Way”; the opening track from their 2018 EP, Art of Love; and the EP’s closing track, “Send Me A Sign”.
The entire performance, like any Cory Henry performance, feels spiritually invigorating. The opening song, released as a single today, is a rapturous sing-along that somehow sounds at-once nostalgic and refreshing. Henry’s Moog solo in the thick of “Trade It All” alone is enough to leave you gaping in awe. As he leads the band back into the song’s final refrain, you can’t help but smile right along with him, his exuberant showmanship highly contagious.
The set closes with “Show Me A Sign”, another infectious tune that jumps deftly back and forth between straight-gospel revelry and a funky New Orleans shuffle. All throughout, the talented Apostles create an impeccable musical springboard—which Cory Henry uses to show NPR Tiny Desk and its countless cross-genre viewers exactly why he’s known as one of the most exciting performers on the road today. Ahead of his weekly residency at the Blue Note in New York throughout the month of October, Henry appeared in multiple all-star sets at last weekend’s Brooklyn Comes Alive. Henry & The Funk Apostles are also heading out on tour for much of this fall and winter, including a highly-anticipated performance with Turkuaz at the storied The Capitol Theatre on Friday, October 19th.
