Ravi Coltrane Teams With Tedeschi Trucks Band At Beacon Theatre

Tedeschi Trucks Band hit the final weekend of their six-show 2018 Beacon Theater residency on Friday. Sans a sit-in from Jimmy Herring and Doyle Bramhall II on the run’s opening night the rock and soul ensemble have kept the stage to themselves. That changed last night when they were joined by saxophonist Ravi Coltrane for a stretch of songs to close out their “Evening With” opening frame and again during their encore.

Their penultimate Beacon show got going with “There’s A Break In The Road” from soul singer Betty Harris. After a take on “Let Me Get By” the multi-piece band served up their take on The Beatles’ “Within You Without You,” dusting off the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band track for the first time in nearly a year. After reeling off a trio of tunes from their songbook and a take on the Four Tops’ “Loving You (Has Made My Life Sweeter Than Ever),” Coltrane emerged. The saxophonist, who is the son of the legendary horn player John Coltrane and jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, first lent his talents to an expansive take on “Midnight In Harlem.” The augmented ensemble would then dig in on a pair of covers to bring the set to a close. First up came Miles Davis’ “Ali” which was followed Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood.”

George Jones’ “Color Of The Blues” to get their second set of the night off the ground. From there, the band would judiciously mix their own material with takes on tunes from Derek & The Dominos, Freddie King and Howlin’ Wolf. Tedeschi Trucks Band would pair “The Storm” from 2013’s Made Up My Mind with the Allman Brothers Band classic “Whipping Post” to bring the stanza an end. Coltrane emerged again at the tail end of the three-song encore for a take on “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” which originally recorded by The Coasters and was a number one hit for Ray Charles in 1966.
