The Allman Brothers Band began hosting the annual Wanee Festival in 2005 at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. The Allmans continued to host through 2014 when Widespread Panic assumed headlining duties. This week, organizers of the spring event revealed that due to coinciding religious holidays, the 2019 Wanee Festival would not be held at The Spirit Of The Suwannee.
Sunday Cinema this week rounds up videos from each of the past Wanee Festivals held in Live Oak between 2005 and 2018. Gov’t Mule kicks it off with a segment from their April 15, 2005 set. That’s followed by a chunk of The Allmans’ set from the following year. ABB bassist Oteil Burbridge leads his Oteil & The Peacemakers project in 2007 and The Allmans show up again from 2008. Umphrey’s McGee can be seen covering Led Zeppelin in 2009, followed by The Black Keys performing in 2010.
Footage from 2011 features Keller Williams covering David Bowie with Roosevelt Collier. Grateful Dead offshoot Furthur can be seen stringing together several Dead classics in 2012. Derek Trucks joins Panic in 2013 and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio sits-in with The Allmans on “Franklin’s Tower” in 2014. Mule shows up again in 2015, while 2016 is filled by Mule guitarist Warren Haynes joining is former ABB band mate Gregg Allman. Anastasio and Grateful Dead/Dead & Company/Futhur’s Bob Weir team up in a video from 2017 and the Chris Robinson-led As The Crow Flies closes things out earlier this year.
