As reported, The String Cheese Incident teamed up with Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes to cover the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues” at The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, Pennsylvania on the Fourth Of July. SCI shared pro-shot video featuring their take on “U.S. Blues” with Warren.
The String Cheese Incident’s headlining performance to close out the four-day festival was the sextet’s first concert in front of an in-person audience since November 30, 2019. Members of the band did however reunite remotely or at their SCI Sound Lab during the pandemic a few times to film videos. One such video saw Bill Nershi, Keith Moseley, Kyle Hollingsworth and Jason Hann pair up to contribute a “U.S. Blues” performance to the Democracy Comes Alive virtual festival.
Sunday was the only time all of The String Cheese Incident covered “U.S. Blues” outside of an Independence Day 2013 show at The Backyard in Austin. Haynes is no stranger to the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter-penned tune as a member of such post-Jerry projects as The Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends.
The String Cheese Incident brought out Haynes to end their first of two Sunday sets in Scranton with “U.S. Blues.” Keith Moseley handled lead vocals on the cover with Warren adding tasty slide guitar riffs throughout. SCI, who takes the stage at the Dillon Amphitheatre next Tuesday and Wednesday, were joined by Blind Boys of Alabama to start their final set at The Peach Music Festival with an “Amazing Grace” featuring elements of “The House Of The Rising Sun.”
