Phish bassist Mike Gordon sat-in with guitarist Brandon “Taz” Niederauer and his band on Friday. The collaboration on a cover of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” took place at The Essex Experience Green in Essex, Vermont.
Niederauer was hot off an appearance at this year’s Peach Music Festival that included a set of his own, guest spots and his participation in a tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band’s iconic At Fillmore East live album. Gordon was one night removed from a collaboration with Old Crow Medicine Show at Higher Ground in South Burlington that also featured his daughter, Tessa. Mike and Tessa also joined Max Creek on “Dark Hollow” last month.
While Mike Gordon usually sings “Funky Bitch” when Phish performs the song, Taz handled lead vocals in Essex. The guitarist and bassist exchanged solos and engaged in a call-and-response segment during the nearly nine-minute version of the Son Seals cover.
Next up for Niederauer is a free show in Atlantic City on July 15. Phish kicks off their summer tour in Rogers, Arkansas on July 28.
