Guitarist Marcus King’s cover of Neal Casal’s “No One Above You” featuring fellow guitarist Eric Krasno is the latest preview of the upcoming covers compilation , Highway Butterfly: The Songs Of Neal Casal. The all-star collection comes out on November 12 with proceeds going toward the Neal Casal Music Foundation non-profit organization, and mental health organizations that support musicians, MusiCares and Backline.Care.
Featuring covers of 41 of Casal’s original songs and co-produced by Casal’s regular collaborators Jim Scott and Widespread Panic/Hard Working Americans bassist Dave Schools, Highway Butterfly was also brought together by Casal’s friend and manager, Gary Waldman. They recruited over 130 musicians for the project.
Casal was 50 when he died by suicide in August 2019. Casal’s music career included performing with Circles Around the Sun, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, GospelbeacH and Hard Working Americans, along with many other projects and collaborations. Casal also recorded and released 14 solo albums under his own name.
Along with King and Krasno, the album features Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks, Billy Strings, Hiss Golden Messenger, Fruit Bats, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Jonathan Wilson, Shooter Jennings, Leslie Mendelson, Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks, Jaime Wyatt, Aaron Lee Tasjan, J Mascis, Dori Freeman, Warren Haynes, Cass McCombs, Kenny Roby, Norah Jones’ Puss N Boots and Tim Heidecker, among others.
“I was always a fan of Neal’s instrumental music and a fan of his as a guitarist,” King told Ultimate Classic Rock who premiered the track featuring Krasno. “But it wasn’t until I was asked to be part of this project that I truly dove into his work as a writer. I’m thankful for his music, and I’m so thrilled for the release of this album … I feel so blessed and honored to have the opportunity to take part in an album celebrating the life and music of a great writer and a beautiful soul. There are so many wonderful friends and musicians [on this album], and I’m humbled and privileged to be mentioned among [them].”
King and Krasno were joined on the recording by Schools on bass, HWA’s Jesse Aycock on acoustic guitar, Lauren Barth and Alex Koford on backing vocals, and Casal’s former CRB bandmates, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and drummer Tony Leone.
