moe. resumed their three-night run at Thalia Hall in Chicago on Friday. The jam quintet debuted a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” during the first set of night two in The Windy City.
moe. kicked off the first frame with a substantial version of the vintage “Rebubula,” penned by bassist Rob Derhak, which surpassed the 20-minute mark. Two more classics in guitarist Al Schnier’s “Understand” and Derhak’s “Tambourine” followed with the latter segueing into “Deep This Time” off the band’s 2008 album Sticks And Stones. The first song from guitarist Chuck Garvey came in the form of the staple “Hi & Lo” which then led into the relatively new tune “Dangerous Game” out of which emerged the debut of “Pink Cadillac.”
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as ambassadors for the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign, moe. has been donning pink clothes and accessories as well as playing pink instruments and pink-themed songs. In the band’s native Buffalo, Garvey dusted off his sax for “The Pink Panther Theme” while night one in Chicago saw moe. unveil Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon.” The Boss rocker “Pink Cadillac” is the latest and moe. delivered a chunky version for the Chicago crowd before closing out the first frame with “Bullet.”
An expansive “Puebla” clocking in at around 21 minutes got the five-song second set underway. From there, moe. found their way into newer tune “Along For The Ride” before delivering another pairing of “Skrunk” and “Down Boy.” A lengthy “McBain” featured the expert vibraphone stylings of percussionist Jim Loughlin and would close down the second frame. moe. kept up the jams in the encore with the staple “St. Augustine” before bringing the evening to a close with a rollicking cover of the Ramones “I Wanna Be Sedated.”
