STS9, The Disco Biscuits & Ghost Light Kick Off Holidaze 2018

The 12th annual installment of Holidaze started on Wednesday at Now Sapphire Resort and Dreams Resort & Spa in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Headliners STS9 and The Disco Biscuits each performed as part of opening night as did Ghost Light. The Biscuits’ second set included a rare cover of “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie.

STS9 kicked off the action with a sunset performance on the beach. The jamtronica act opened with a run of “Oil & Water,” “The Spectacle,” “Water Song” and “Kaya.” Last night’s “The Spectacle” was one of few the band has played since 2012. “King Pharoah’s “Tomb” was then followed by “Walk To The Light” and the recently debuted original “Presence Of Light.” Tribe’s second set included rarity “Biggs” and relatively new songs “Menacer,” “Dragon City” and “Seed” as well as staples “Arigato,” “Evasive Maneuvers,” “Breathe In” and “The Rabble.”

Jamtronica pioneers the Disco Biscuits came out of the gates with “On Time” and then led the 2018 debut of classic “Vassillios” into an unfinished “Air Song” and the beloved “Astronaut.” The quartet closed out the frame with “Jigsaw Earth.” Last night’s second set began with the band’s 2018 debut of “Let’s Dance.” Out of the Bowie cover came an unfinished “Kamaole Sands” and the rare “The Bionic Helix.” The year’s first “Papercut” bled into the end of a “Helicopters” that was started on Sunday night in Frisco, Colorado.

Ghost Light focused on originals during their late night performance at Holidaze on Wednesday. The quintet led off with “Synth Driver” and then kicked off a “Come Apart” they would finish until much later in the set. “Best Kept Secret” was also split up and included a number of tunes in between such as a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.” Holidaze continues today with sets from Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Lotus, STS9, the Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee and Orchard Lounge.
