Dave Matthews & Friends Play Hartford In 2003

222

Fifteen years ago, Dave Matthews & Friends were in the midst of their inaugural tour. The band found Matthews joined by guitarists Trey Anastasio and Tim Reynolds, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, drummer Brady Blade and bassist Tony Hall. For this week’s Throwback Thursday, here’s a look at a Dave & Friends show that took place 15 years ago yesterday at the Hartford Civic Center.

Dave was touring in support of his Some Devil solo album. Each night of the run began with Dave & Tim presenting an acoustic duo set. Matthews and Reynolds performed such DMB classics as “Ants Marching,” “Bartender” and “Dancing Nancies” in Hartford. Then, the whole band came out for a second set heavy on Some Devil tracks. Emmylou Harris emerged about halfway through for “Oh Sister,” while guitarist Buddy Miller added to a cover of “Hey Bulldog” by The Beatles. Dave & Friends fit a number of additional covers into the frame including Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill,” The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek,” Paul Simon’s “American Tune,” Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles” and Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).”

Anastasio and Matthews emerged to start the encore with the Phish ballad “Waste” and a cover of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.” The rest of the band that came out to end the evening with a take on Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain.” Here’s video of the whole show shared by ChesterCopperpot5 will credit to Less Than Face Productions:
