Arc Angels reunited for a run of four concerts in their home state of Texas that ended with a hometown show in Austin on Monday night. Blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. and The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson sat-in with the supergroup at Austin’s ACL Live.
The band formed in 1992 and have only played approximately 30 shows since as per the Dallas Observer. Having last shared the stage in 2009, Arc Angels’ performances in San Antonio last Thursday, Houston last Friday, Dallas on Saturday and Austin on Monday marked their first concerts in over a decade. Original members Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall II and Chris Layton were joined by bassist Eric Holden for the run.
Arc Angels focused on material from their 1992 self-titled debut studio album in Austin. Covers played sans guests included takes on Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel” and “Young Blood” by The Coasters. Chris Robinson emerged towards the end of the night and contributed to a cover of Doug Sahm’s “At The Crossroads.” Gary Clark Jr. then came out for Albert King’s “Killing Floor” and stuck around as Robinson returned for covers of The Beatles’ “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” and “Oh Death” by Charley Patton. Chris Robinson also led Arc Angels and a keyboardist through “Hard To Handle,” an Otis Redding song The Black Crowes made their own on 1990’s Shake Your Money Maker.
