Watch Billy Strings Cover Phish’s ‘Back On The Train’ In Augusta

Billy Strings concluded a two-night stand in Augusta, Georgia on Wednesday with a concert that featured his first cover of Phish’s “Back On The Train” since last July. Strings also went solo for a geographically-appropriate tune played on banjo during last night’s show at Bell Auditorium.

“Back On The Train” has been part of the guitarist’s repertoire for nearly five years. Billy and his bandmates — bassist Royal Masat, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and banjoist Billy Failing — dusted off the song from Phish’s Farmhouse album early in last night’s second set. All four musicians took solos during “Back On The Train.”

Strings opened Wednesday’s concert with three songs from his Grammy-nominated 2021 album Renewal: “Red Daisy,” “Hellbender” and “Hide & Seek.” The guitarist then led his group through Jeff Austin’s “Run Down” before they turned to 2019’s Home for “Watch It Fall.” A pairing of Renewal’s “Fire On My Tongue” and Home standout “Must Be Seven” followed. From there the four-piece covered Tony Rice’s “Tipper” and worked their own “Taking Water” into the Frank Wakefield cover “End Of The Rainbow” to end the set.

A rousing “Dust In A Baggie” gave way to “Back On The Train” to get last night’s second set underway. An extended take on Home’s title track came next. Then, Billy Strings treated Peach State fans to a solo banjo rendition of the traditional “Georgia Buck.” Strings and his crew went on to work “Home Of The Red Fox” (Bill Emerson) into “Ole Slew-Foot” (Johnny Horton) before tackling Renewal track “Heartbeat of America.” A surprise followed as the band brought back The Stanley Brothers’ “Rank Stranger” for its first play since August 11, 2021. The frame concluded with a run featuring the frequently paired “On The Line” and “Train 45” and 2021 single “Wargasm.”

Billy Strings said farewell to Augusta by performing the traditional “John Hardy” as the evening’s encore. Watch fan-shot video featuring last night’s “Back On The Train” below:
